Bowater Toyota has been involved with Toitū Envirocare, and the standards they offer, since the early 2010's, when they were called Enviro-Mark. We believed that it was not only important to be actively embracing sustainability, but also holding ourselves accountable by becoming part of a programme that ensured we maintained a level of excellence and commitment year on year. Over the years we have progressed through the system of accreditation as we have made imporovements to our sites, practises and product use. 

Toitū Envirocare empowers businesses to lead sustainable change through rigorous, science-backed climate action. Ther purpose is simple: to help organisations make credible, measurable environmental impacts. Founded in 2001 as a subsidiary of Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, now a part of the Bioeconomy Science Institute, Toitū brings over two decades of expertise in science-led environmental solutions. Today, they lead the way in accredited carbon certifications, environmental certification, advisory, and CRD assurance, empowering organisations to drive credible climate action aligned with global standards. These standards are recognised the world over, but here in New Zealand we are proud to showcase our Toitū Accreditation.

At the heart of Toitū Enviromark certification lies a robust Environmental Management System (EMS) designed to reduce our environmental impact and enhance operational efficiency. An EMS is simply a structured approach to managing environmental risks and opportunities, providing a clear pathway to sustainable business practices.

All of our Bowater Toyota Stores are Toitū Diamond Accredited and the Toitū Enviromark offers us a flexible, step-by-step system, built on legal compliance and industry-leading sustainability practices. With Toitū’s support, and a lot of hard work at our end, we have build an internal environmental compliance system that meets international standards and makes our business future-ready.

After years of planning, work got underway in the winter of 2019 on a very important Bowater Toyota store. The goal was to bring our Bowater Toyota store in Richmond into the 21st Century and future proof it for generations to come. 

Over the recent years Richmond has grown exponentially, with the future growth models predicting further rapid expansion. 

This has led to a massive increase in the traffic through the Bowater Toyota Richmond Service Workshop and associated Parts Department. The need was clearly there to increase capacity.

It was decided to expand the store and add in more service bays into the workshop, increasing the through put and enabling the team to service a greater number of vehicles in what would be a state of the art facility. This occured quickly but was caught up in the Covid era, so we missed the opportunity to celebrate the investment into the future of our business with the wider community. 

Part of the strategy was to also future proof this investment by including new technology, enabling a more sustainable outcome for not just the Bowater Toyota Richmond store, but also for the surrounding community by creating a much lighter environmental footprint built into the design process. 

This new store has a massive solar array on the roof, creating the ability to generate large amounts of electricity and feed the excess back into the grid. The well insulated workshop space, along with underfloor heating of the concrete pad has produced a more energy efficient business in both hot and cold conditions, as well as a much more pleasant workplace environment for the hard working team. 

Rainwater collection and use throughout the building, especially in the cleaning and grooming bay, has produced great savings and further reduces the need to rely solely on the local infrastructure. 

To top it all off there is a free charging plug for our customers to top up their electric vehicles during business hours.
