Toyota Service Protect Terms and Conditions
Toyota Service Protect Terms
Definitions:
Authorised Toyota Dealer means a registered motor vehicle dealer, authorised by Us to sell Toyota vehicles, parts and accessories as well as complete the scheduled servicing requirements and warranty or repair work for Your vehicle.
Covered Part means the items set out at clause 8.
Eligible Service means a service due in accordance with Your vehicle’s Recommended Service Schedule, excluding intermediate services.
Eligible Vehicle means a Toyota Vehicle that:
- Receives an Eligible Service with an Authorised Toyota Dealer (eg Bowater Toyota); and
- Is less than 10 years old and has travelled no more than 150,000km at the time of service.
Failure means a sudden or unexpected mechanical or electrical Failure.
Gross Vehicle Mass means the maximum permissible total weight of the vehicle, as designed by the manufacturer, that may not be exceeded. Gross Vehicle Mass includes the maximum amounts of fuel, coolant and all items of standard equipment including the spare tyre & tools etc., the weight of the passengers, the weight of the payload and the downward weight on the towball if towing a trailer.
Intermediate Service Interval means every 6 months or 7,500kms.
Intermediate Service means the service required for your vehicle to meet the Intermediate Servicing Requirements.
Intermediate Servicing Requirements means that your vehicle receives on time intermediate servicing for each Intermediate Service Interval required in accordance with the Recommended Service Schedule.
On Time Servicing means either:
- within 2 months of the 12 month Service Interval or 2,000km of the 15,000km Service Interval (as applicable); or
- for vehicles with a 6 month/7,500 km Service Interval, within 1 month of the 6 month Service Interval or 1,000km of the 7,500km Service Interval (as applicable).
Recommended Service Schedule means the items that need to be inspected, adjusted, or replaced at each Service Interval as specified by Toyota New Zealand.
Service Agent means a third party authorised by Us to sell parts and accessories as well as complete warranty or repair work.
Service Interval means when Your vehicle is due for servicing. For Toyota vehicles, the service intervals are every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first. Some vehicles may require intermediate servicing every 7,500kms or 6 months.
Servicing Requirements means that Your vehicle receives On Time Servicing for each Service Interval:
- in accordance with the manufacturer’s Recommended Service Schedule; and
- in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications using Toyota Approved Parts, Fluids and Accessories recommended by the manufacturer of Your vehicle.
Terms means the terms and conditions of this Warranty set out in this document.
Toyota Approved Parts, Fluids and Accessories means Toyota Genuine Parts, Fluids and Accessories, and Parts, Fluids and accessories that are otherwise approved or recommended by Toyota for the vehicle, that are fitted to the manufacturer's specifications.
Warranty means the 12-month or 15,000km coverage (whichever occurs first) and includes Roadside Assistance for Eligible Vehicles, as outlined in these Terms. It covers any Covered Part of an Eligible Vehicle (unless excluded under the Warranty Exclusions section) that experiences a Failure. In such cases, the part will be repaired or replaced to a condition equal to or better than its state immediately before the Failure. For more details, see clause 7.
Warranty Period means the period beginning on the date that Your vehicle completes an Eligible Service with an Authorised Toyota Dealer, and will expire on the earlier of:
- the date that is 12 months after the commencement of the Warranty Period; or
- the point at which Your vehicle has travelled 15,000km from the commencement of the Warranty Period.
We, Us, Our, or Toyota New Zealand means Toyota New Zealand Limited.
You or Your means the registered owner of the Eligible Vehicle.
- General Terms: Subject to the Terms contained below, Toyota New Zealand warrants that during the Warranty Period any part of Your Eligible Vehicle (also referred to in these Terms as your vehicle) covered under the Warranty, that is not excluded by the Warranty exclusions section of these Terms, which suffers a sudden or unexpected mechanical or electrical Failure, will be repaired or replaced to a condition that is in no way inferior to that immediately prior to the Failure.
- Any defect must be reported to an Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent immediately after discovery (but within the Warranty Period) and Your vehicle must be made available for assessment and repair at the Authorised Toyota Dealer’s or Service Agent’s place of business as soon as practicable.
- Additional cosmetic parts, performance parts and accessories, other than Toyota Approved Parts, Fluids and Accessories, are classified as being of a nonstandard nature and are subject to the respective manufacturer's or installer's own warranty conditions. Such items include (but are not limited to) LPG/CNG conversion kits and other after-market products.
- In Service Inspection: If your vehicle is not covered by an existing warranty provided by Toyota New Zealand, then your vehicle will be subject to an In-Service Inspection by the servicing Authorised Toyota Dealer to assess the state of your vehicle and (at its discretion) identify any pre-existing issues. Pre-existing issues will be recorded by the Authorised Toyota Dealer on the Authorised Toyota Dealer's In-Service Inspection check sheet. If your vehicle fails an In-Service Inspection, it will not be eligible for this Warranty unless the failed items are repaired by an Authorised Toyota Dealer within 3 months or 1,500kms of the initial inspection. Any faults or defects in, or Failures of, any components that existed prior to the commencement of the Warranty Period will not be covered by the Warranty.
- Not redeemable: The benefits set out in these Terms are not redeemable for cash or discount.
- Invalid outside of New Zealand: this Warranty is only valid while the vehicle remains in New Zealand. This Warranty will become invalid if the vehicle leaves New Zealand.
Your Obligations & Responsibilities:
- For the Warranty to remain valid, You must:
- Report any defect in your vehicle to an Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent promptly after discovery and make your vehicle available for assessment at the Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent's place of business as soon as practicable (see clause 24 for details of the claims process);
- Have Your vehicle serviced in accordance with the Servicing Requirements. In the event of a claim, You must be able to demonstrate that Your vehicle has been serviced in accordance with this requirement (through Your Service Record Booklet or other record that validates the vehicle’s warranty and service history).
- Ensure that only the Toyota Approved Parts, Fluids and Accessories recommended by the manufacturer of Your vehicle, are used in any repair or service of Your vehicle. If parts, fluids and accessories are used that are not recommended by the manufacturer, the Warranty may cease to be valid, unless an Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent determines through investigation that the relevant parts, fluids or accessories have not contributed to or impacted the matter that is the subject of the warranty claim.
- In the event of a Failure, use all reasonable means to protect Your vehicle from further damage; and
- In the event of a Failure, ensure that Your vehicle is repaired by an Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent.
- Intermediate Service: If your vehicle requires an Intermediate Service (as advised by us on our website or as communicated to you by an Authorised Toyota Dealer), you must ensure that your vehicle receives that Intermediate Service at an Authorised Toyota Dealer accordance with the Intermediate Servicing Requirements.
Warranty Inclusions:
- The following items are covered under the Warranty:
- Exhaust Systems: Pipes; Gaskets; Hangers; Mufflers; Sensors; Catalytic Convertor/DPF; After Engine Urea Systems. Exclusions: Urea Fluid, misfuelling, DPF burns, and Carbon Removal from the 5Th Injector are not covered.
- Engine: Cylinder Head; Cylinder Head Gaskets; Camshaft Followers; Hydraulic Tappets; Camshaft; Valves & Guides; Timing Gears; VVTi (l) Controllers; Timing Chain/Belt (needed for repair not normal maintenance); Con Rods & Pins; Oil Pump; Auto Drive Plate; Shell Bearings & Bushes; Pistons & Rings; Cylinder Block; Crankshaft; Balance Shaft; Flywheel & Ring Gear; Manifolds; Frost Plugs; Gaskets; Oil Pressure Sender Unit & Switch; Oil Seals; O-Ring; Engine Mounts.

- Differential: Axles; Crown Wheel & Pinion; Casing & Gears; Differential Clutch packs; Bearings & Bushes; Extension Shafts; Limited Slip Components (including torque sensing and electrically operated LSD); ADD Unit and Actuator; Oil Seals; Gaskets; Electronic Coupling.
- Suspension: Coil Springs; Upper & Lower Wishbones; Leaf Springs; Ball Joints; Strut Mounts; Stabiliser Bar/ Bushes; Hub Assembly; Trailing Arms; Adjustable Height Suspension. Exclusions: Shock Absorbers are not covered.
- Seat & Base: Manual and Electric Seat Adjustment Mechanisms; Seat Heaters. Exclusions: Seat Covers, Bases and Frames are not covered.
- SRS (Supplementary Restraint System): Mechanical Faults – Seat Belts only; Electrical Faults – Air Bags; Pre-Tensioners; Air Bag ECU; SRS Sensors; Spiral Cable. Exclusions: Wiring and Plugs are not covered.
- Engine Management System: Auto Transmission ECU; Engine ECU; Engine Management Sensors & Actuators; Emission Control ECUs & Sensors.
- Cooling System: Water Pump; Viscous Coupling; Fan & Thermo Switch; Cooling Fan Motor & ECU; Heater Core; Oil Cooler; Radiator; Thermostat & Housing; Pressure Cap; Hoses; HV Coolant Pump; Actuators and Sensors.
- Air Conditioning: Cooling Fan; Compressor; Condenser; Pressure Hoses (excluding Failure caused by external damage); Fan Motor; Evaporator; A/C System Sensors; Control Units, Actuators and Cables (including HVAC system).
- Turbo/Supercharger: Wastegate; Turbine; Shaft; Impellers; VNV Turbo: Vane Driver Unit; Bearings; Intercooler; Supercharger Unit; Oil Seals; Bearings; Gaskets.
- Steering Components: Steering Box/Rack; Rack Electric Power Steering Motor; Power Steering ECU (including Steering lock ECU); Mounts & Bushes; Reservoir & Pipes; Oil Seals & Shafts; Rack & Tie Rod Ends; Power Steering Pump; Idler Box; Steering Column; Bushes & Bearings; VGRS System; Hoses; Sensors and Actuators.
- Fuel System: Airflow Meter; Throttle Body; Fuel Pumps; Control Valves; Common Rail; Fuel Delivery Pipes; Fuel Injection Pump; EDU and ECU’s; Sensors; Injectors; Injector Pump Drive; Fuel Gauge; Fuel Sender Unit; Fuel Pressure Regulator and Relief valves; Accelerator Throttle Cable. Exclusions: System Failure due to fuel contamination or incorrect fuelling is not covered.
- This Warranty also gives You the additional benefit of Roadside Assistance for Your vehicle throughout the Warranty Period. To access the 24-hour Roadside Assistance please phone 0800 900 505. Roadside Assistance includes:
- Mechanical breakdown assistance.
- Flat battery jump starts.
- Flat tyre replacements with the vehicle's spare or inflated with the vehicle's inflator kit.
- Vehicle lock outs (a service provider will attempt to open the vehicle subject to satisfactory proof of authority to use the vehicle).
- Out of fuel (up to $20 including GST worth of fuel) or a charge top up for an Electric Vehicle to enable the vehicle to get to the nearest fuelling or charging station. If this is not practical, recovery of the vehicle will be provided to the nearest service station or charging point; and
- Towing to the nearest Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent if the vehicle is immobilised.
- While there is no limit to the number of call-outs, there are some situations when Roadside Assistance will not apply. See the exclusions in clauses 13 and 14 below for details of the exclusions.
Warranty Exclusions:
- The following items and situations are not covered under this Warranty:
- Hybrid high voltage battery capacity degradation, for example; if the battery needs to recharge more frequently
- Expendable Items (including, but not limited to, spark plugs, batteries, tyres, filters, hoses, belts and wiper blades).
- Maintenance items such as grease, oil, coolant, refrigerant, clutch and brake linings and/or pads, disc machining, adjustments and alignments, unless required in connection with the repair or replacement of a Covered Part.
- Damage to the vehicle, Failures or other costs resulting from Your refusal or delay in installing updates (including over the air updates) requested by the Data Communication Module (DCM) or damage to the vehicle caused as a result of interference with the DCM system (if applicable).
- Audio Systems.
- Rust, Corrosion or Paint Defects
- Electric Vehicle High Voltage Battery.
- Wire Harness.
- Interior Trim and Upholstery.
- Navigation Units.
- Other items specifically noted as exclusions in clause 8
- Failures or faults relating to, or repairs necessary due to:
- damage caused by an accident or animal.
- misfuelling or damage to the engine/fuel system by the ingestion of incorrect or contaminated fuel or additives.
- the use of parts, fluids or accessories that are not Manufacturer Approved Parts, Fluids or Accessories or the use of fuel, lubricants or fluids not recommended by the manufacturer of the vehicle.
- repairs or adjustments carried out by someone other than an Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent.
- a Failure to carry out regular maintenance or servicing in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- alterations or modifications to the manufacturer’s original specification or the installation of parts, fluids or accessories that are not Manufacturer Approved Parts, Fluids or Accessories (including non-factory fitted LPG/CNG conversions/fitments and the use of gas in these conversion fitments).
- any faults or defects in, or Failures of, any components that existed prior to the Plan Start Date of this Warranty, including, without limitation, any pre-existing issues identified by the Authorised Toyota Dealer during an In-Service Inspection and recorded on the In-Service Inspection check sheet (if applicable).
- any faults or defects in, or Failures of, any components that existed prior to the Plan Start Date of this Warranty, including, without limitation, any pre-existing issues identified by the Authorised Toyota Dealer during an In-Service Inspection and recorded on the In-Service Inspection check sheet (if applicable).
- Any costs associated with diagnostic assessment if the repair is not covered by this Warranty.
- The repair or replacement of any part as a result of normal wear and tear, including rattles and squeaks.
- Any other repair that could be claimable under any other form of guarantee, warranty or insurance. This includes the vehicle manufacturer’s warranty supplied with Your vehicle from new.
- The Failure of a Covered Part that has been caused by the Failure of a non-Covered Part; or
- Rust as a result of Failure to maintain the vehicle in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
- This Warranty will cease to be valid if:
- The vehicle is taken out of New Zealand, used in competition, rallying or racing, or subjected to extraordinary use, such as (but not limited to) mining, severe off-road use, agricultural spraying, Police or emergency operation.
- In Our sole discretion, We determine that the vehicle is written off or considered a total loss.
- The vehicle is damaged by neglect, accident or improper use, unless an Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent determines through investigation that the neglect, accident or improper use did not contribute to or impact the matter that is the subject of the warranty claim.
- The odometer fitted to the vehicle is altered or replaced (except where it has been repaired or replaced under warranty) or the odometer drive system has been disconnected or affected in some way, causing the odometer reading to not provide a reasonable indication of the distance the vehicle has travelled.
- The manufacturer’s identification numbers or marks have been altered or removed.
- The vehicle has a Gross Vehicle Mass of more than 3,500kg (for example because accessories are added to the vehicle).
- Roadside Assistance does not include:
- Vehicle parts and labour; or
- Any expense for additional transportation, or a return journey to pick up extra passengers.
- Roadside Assistance is not available:
- When the vehicle is unattended.
- For vehicles not on public or formed roads or that are trapped/bogged, or that are outside the North or South Islands of New Zealand.
- For breakdowns covered under insurance policies.
- When the vehicle is disabled due to a motor vehicle accident, or stolen or damaged due to theft or vandalism.
- When the vehicle is immobilised by a Failure to carry a serviceable spare wheel or a tyre inflator kit.
- For vehicles carrying a load beyond the legal limit.
- When the vehicle is un-roadworthy or it would be dangerous or illegal for Roadside Assistance personnel or contractors to repair, load or transport the vehicle and/or its occupants (the carriage of passengers because of a breakdown can only be to the legal limit of the attending vehicle); or
- For incorrectly fuelled vehicles. Recovery for incorrectly fuelled vehicles will be at the owner’s expense.
- Roadside Assistance services may also be delayed or altered due to a force majeure event. Force majeure means a circumstance beyond the reasonable control of a party that results in that party being unable to observe or perform an obligation (including (a) acts of God, lightning strikes, earthquakes, floods, storms, explosions, fires and any natural disaster; (b) acts of war, acts of public enemies, terrorism, riots, civil commotion, malicious damages, sabotage and revolution; (c) strikes or industrial disputes; (d) embargo; or (e) power, water or other utility shortage).
- Expiry of Roadside Assistance: Your entitlement to Roadside Assistance coverage expires at the end of the Warranty Period or when the Warranty cancelled or terminated.
Your rights to transfer:
- Should You decide to sell Your vehicle, the unused portion of the Warranty is transferable to the new registered owner (unless the Warranty has ceased to be valid in accordance with these Terms). To transfer the Warranty please fill out the details on the Change of Ownership form that You can find at www.toyota.co.nz/owners/warranties/change-of-ownership/. Alternatively, You may contact Your Authorised Toyota Dealer or call us on 0800 TOYOTA (0800 869 682) and we will update the ownership details.
Our right to terminate:
- Toyota New Zealand reserves the right to terminate Your Warranty or decline any claim if:
- You fail to disclose any relevant information.
- You make any material misrepresentation as to the condition or standard of Your vehicle before this Warranty commences.
- You fail to meet the Terms set out in this Warranty.
- You or anyone acting on Your behalf make a false statement or dishonest claim or statement to support any repair or claim made under this Warranty.
Making a Claim:
- You can claim up to the following amounts per claim (including GST):
- Vehicle repair costs: $6,900 NZD Inc GST.
- Towing to the nearest Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent under Your Roadside Assistance cover: Fully covered.
- Further vehicle movements at Toyota New Zealand’s discretion, for example, to transport the vehicle to a specialist repairer or to return the vehicle once repaired: $300 NZD Inc GST.
- If You have a breakdown more than 50km from Your usual place of residence and the warranty repair cannot be completed within 24 hours, You can be reimbursed for vehicle rental and/or accommodation required while Your vehicle is getting repaired (excluding the cost of meals, beverages, toll road costs, or the cost of fuel for a rental vehicle) A rental vehicle will not be provided for business purposes or for the use of fare or reward: $600 NZD Inc GST.
- Warranty allowances will only be reimbursed if You have met Your responsibilities (as outlined under Your Obligations and Responsibilities above) and the Failure is covered under the Terms of this Warranty.
- Toyota New Zealand’s maximum liability for all claims under this Warranty is $10,000 NZD including GST, if any.
- You may be liable for diagnostic and/or repair costs if the Failure is deemed not to be covered under the Terms of this Warranty.
- There are different processes for vehicle repair costs, towing costs, and accommodation/rental vehicle costs.
- Vehicle repair process/costs:
- Take Your vehicle to the nearest Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent.
- Discuss the condition or problem with the Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent, including the service history details and other relevant information. Provide Your Service Record Booklet for the vehicle or other record that validates the vehicle’s warranty and service history to the Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent.
- Your Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent will investigate the problem and determine if the condition is covered by this Warranty.
- Your Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent will discuss the repair with You, including any costs which You may be liable for (for example, diagnostic and/or repair costs if the Failure is deemed not to be covered under the Terms of this Warranty).
- The vehicle will be repaired by the Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent.
- The Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent will submit a claim for costs covered by this Warranty to Toyota New Zealand (Toyota New Zealand reimburses the Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent).
- You pay the Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent for any costs which You are liable for.
- Towing process/costs:
- Call Roadside Assistance on 0800 900 505.
- The Roadside Assistance provider will arrange towing to the nearest Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent.
- Discuss any other vehicle movement/towing costs with the Authorised Toyota Dealer or Service Agent.
- If your vehicle is towed and the defect is not covered by the Warranty, you will be liable for any towing costs incurred.
- Accommodation/Rental vehicle process/costs:
- You pay the costs directly to the accommodation/rental vehicle provider (this person/company must be GST registered).
- Complete a Reimbursement Claim form that You can find at www.toyota.co.nz/owners/warranties/reimbursement-claim/.
- Email or post Your completed form and receipts to: Toyota Care Department, Toyota New Zealand, National Customer Centre, P O Box 46, Palmerston North Central, Palmerston North 4440 or
